   COMMISSION A WATERCOLOR PORTRAIT
                    OF YOUR DOG!
My watercolors generally have a more subtle palette than my
other works.  If you prefer bold color, than my oil, pastel, or
colored pencil portraits are probably a better choice for you.

Please look over my portfolio of watercolor portraits on this
page.  Currently, in watercolor, I only paint single dog head
portraits in two sizes - 5" x 7" (small) and 8" x 10" (large).

    YOUR SATISFACTION IS 100% GUARANTEED!

    Your watercolor
    portrait can either
    have a painted
    background or no
    background.

    Backgrounds work
    well  with white
    dogs to help define
    the outline.

    Dogs of any hair
    type  can be
    portrayed in
    watercolor.

    Most people choose
    a vertical format for
    their portrait.  But
    on long-nosed
    breeds shown in
    profile, a horizontal
    format is
    particularly
    effective.

    Transparent
    watercolor does not
    utilize opaque white
    paint. Any white that
    appears in the
    painting is the
    paper.

    This means the
    artist must think
    before putting a
    mark down on the
    paper. A solid grasp
    of form is essential
    to successfully
    portray the dog in
    watercolor.

    Watercolor an ideal
    medium to portray
    white or cream
    colored dogs.

    Dogs of all colors
    can be portrayed in
    watercolor.
    However, the
    medium seems to
    have an affinity for
    many of the red,
    fawn, and cream
    colors.  It is also
    effective to portray
    the soft merle
    coloration pattern,
    as shown in the
    Australian Shepherd.

    Whether or not to
    have a background
    color is both a
    personal and artistic
    choice.  The mostly
    white Harlequin
    Great Dane
    watercolor is
    without a
    background, relying
    on an outline of the
    profile to define the
    dog.

    On the other hand,
    there is a
    suggestion of a
    background in the
    portrait of the
    Scottie, with the
    creamy yellow
    ochre picking up
    the lighter brindle
    pattern of the dog's
    coat.

    Be sure to select
    photos that
    represent the
    "typical" pose or
    expression of your
    dog. For example,
    this Pug has "rose"
    ears. I would
    normally paint the
    ears forward in a
    more alert position.
    But, the owner told
    me that her dog
    routinely held them
    back.

    You know your dog
    better than I do.  I
    will take the time to
    work with you so
    you have a portrait
    to treasure for
    years to come.
